We’re Boots On The Ground: Staten Island, a grassroots relief organization in Staten Island working to recover from Superstorm Sandy.
Areas like Midland Beach and New Dorp were devastated when Sandy’s swift floodwaters and high winds ripped through our hometown. In the days and weeks right after the storm, Mike “Loco” Hoffman was joining together with other ad hoc volunteers, just regular people and neighbors, who came together to start putting the pieces back together.
As the recovery effort developed, we realized that our daily efforts as “boots on the ground” volunteers were providing us a unique firsthand education in disaster recovery 101. As the needs constantly evolved, we kept learning more about the best ways to help. We’ve fostered a network of reliable and dedicated volunteers, secured donations in the forms of supplies, tools, some funding, and labor… and it was as we realized that people were counting us, we knew we wanted to get organized.
Word of Mouth has served us well! If you’ve been in Staten Island since Sandy hit, there’s a good chance you’ve met someone in our group at some point.
While we’ve come a long way since those first flooded days, there is still so much left to do. So now we’re putting a name to our crew, working to legitimize who we are by creating official organizational infrastructure, and stretching out our reach. We want the stories of Staten Island’s Sandy Survivors to reach farther than the Greater-NYC area, we need help from more people – beyond our own circles of friends and contacts.
So, here we are!
We’ve literally had our Boots On The Ground since the very beginning, and will continue to do the hard work that’s so needed until all of Staten Island has been rebuilt.
Please feel free to contact us, reach out! If you’d like to get involved, we’d love to have you on our team. We need all kinds of help – from labor volunteers, to donated tools, to funds to help keep our group supplied and running. Call or text Mike “Loco” Hoffman if you need to talk to an on-scene contact (917.548.0523), or email us any time: BootsOnTheGroundStatenIsland@gmail.com.
Thank you and God Bless!
